Four Women Are Included
in Wisconsin Golden Gloves
by WBAN's Correspondent Bill Harris
MILWAUKEE, Wisc. (April 22) – The Wisconsin
Golden Gloves Tournament came back to Milwaukee Saturday and was greeted
by an enthusiastic, if not sellout crowd, at the Rave ballroom. Two
women’s bouts started the action after the intermission in the 15-bout
card. The female matches were met with solid applause as the crowd showed
its appreciation.
Melinda Torres of North Shore Boxing Club, Waukegan, took Erin Riley,
Roufus Boxing Gym here, to school stopping the local boxer in the first
round. Riley seemed overwhelmed by Torres’ brawl-and-swarm style but
showed more aggression in this, her second competitive bout, than in her
first test March 22 in the same building but a different ballroom. Torres
has been boxing at least a year while Riley started training last
November.
The bout opened with Riley showing some aggression but Torres brawled with
Riley, who seems more of a boxer than a brawler, and outdid her with
furious attacks forcing her into the corners and against the ropes which
blunted Riley’s attack. Torres forced two eight counts in the first round,
the second of which prompted the ref to call the match with Torres
victorious.
In the second female bout, Gina Medina, 145, Medina Gym, Waukesha, faced
Tiffany Bucholz, of Ford’s Gym, Madison. The bout opened with good
exchanges by both boxers and some fast paced action as each busied herself
with trying to score points. Bucholz worked her jab well, though, and was
in Medina’s face regularly eventually bringing an eight-count in the first
round. Bucholz suffered a left shoulder injury in the first and it was
iced between rounds for the remainder of the competition. She boxed
through, though, and showed little sign of being really troubled.
Medina gathered herself in the second and the contest was even for a time
before Bucholz got her jab going again and pressed Medina for much of the
two minutes. In the third, Bucholz came out in good condition while a
tiring Medina was showing the effects of the previous two rounds mouth
open and backing up while she blocked Bucholz’ jabs with her face. Midway
through the third Bucholz was getting through to Medina regularly and the
referee called an eight-count on Medina and waved off the bout.
The program was held at the Rave, 2401 W. Wisconsin Ave., after a 10-year
absence when the tournament was moved first to Waukesha Expo Arena and
then to Racine Memorial Hall. One argument for Howard Zaffke, the
franchise owner, to return to Milwaukee but in these preliminaries there
were six Milwaukee boxers in the 30-athlete field. Next Saturday the
semi-finals will be held and the following week, May 3, final competition
will determine winners to represent the state. Tickets are available
through several Milwaukee outlets: Mary Hartung, 414-647-0733; Del Porter,
head coach at the Ace Boxing Club, 414-645-6487; the Rave, 414-342-7263,
and from Ricky Wallace, Martin Luther King Center, 414-241-6660. Added
information about the program can be obtained from Kathy Zaffke at
262-835-1486.

Melinda Torres, facing

during their 138-pound bout of the Wisconsin Golden Gloves preliminaries
at the Rave. It was Riley's second competitive bout since starting her
boxing training in November.
