Debora Dionicius

Bantamweight Débora Anahí "La Gurisa" Dionicius was born on March 19 1988 in Villaguay, Entre Rios, Argentina.  She is reported to have won 105 of her 109 fights as an amateur, and she fought on the Argentinean women's national team, trained by Luis Peteco Franco. She won gold medals in the 54-kg division at the Pan-American women's championships in 2007 and 2010, and a silver medal in 2009.

At the Pan-American Women's Championships held in Buenos Aires, Argentina from June 1-7 2006, she lost narrowly to Lydia Walczak of Canada by a 17-15 score in the 54-kg semifinal.  (The 54-kg division was won that year by Emily Klinefelter of the USA).

In the 54-kg division at the Argentinean Women's Championships held in Mendoza on August 7-11, 2007, she defeated Jessica Massara by a 5-0 decision in the quarterfinal,  Gloria Diaz by a 5-0 decision in the semifinal, and Victoria Gonzalez by a 4-1 decision in the final.

In the 54-kg division of the Pan-American Women's Championships held in Duran, Ecuador in October 5-8, 2007, she defeated Christina Cruz of the United States 23-10 in the quarterfinal, Isabelle Menard of Canada 11-7 in the semifinal, and Leonor Loma of Ecuador by RSCO-2 in the final, to take her first Pan-Am gold medal,

In the 54-kg division of the Pan-American Women's Championships held in Guayaquil, Ecuador on October 5-8, 2009. she defeated Jeimy Gomez of the Dominican Republic 10-5 in the quarterfinal, Carolina Arias of Costa Rica 7-3 in the semifinal, and lost by 8-2 to Vicky Pelletier of Canada in the final.

In the 54-kg division at the Pan-American Women's Championships held on August 6-10, 2010 in Brasilia, Brazil, she defeated Erin Woodrow of Canada 8-5 in the quarterfinal, Jeimy Gomez of the Dominican Republic by RSC-4 in the semifinal, and Carolina Arias of Costa Rica by 11-7 in the final, to take her second Pan-Am gold medal.

She made her pro boxing debut on her twenty-third birthday, March 19 2011, at the Club Atlético Central Argentino in La Carlota, Cordoba, Argentina. She weighed iin at 116¾ lbs and won a four-round unanimous (40-36,40-36, 40-36½) decision over 25-year-old Natalia Vanesa Lopez (115 lbs) of Buenos AIres, Argentina. Dionicius used her jab and reach advantage to control the action with accurate shots to the face of her busy but wilder-punching opponent, who fell to 2-3 (0 KO's) with the loss. [Video]

Dionicius vs CaucotaOn April 16, 2011 at Centro Recreativo Municipal Néstor Carlos Kirchner in Barrio Santa Paula, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Debora (114 lbs) won a four-round unanimous (40-36,39-37½,,40-36½) decision over Norma Elizabeth Diaz Caucota (116½ lbs) of Buenos Aires.  The fight started at a hectic pace with both throwing plenty of leather, Dionicius being more mobile in the ring and also more accurate with shots to the face of her aggressive opponent. Caucota was looking to brawl inside with Dionicius, who was trying to keep the fight at longer range. Caucota, who had come to fight and kept pressing forward throughout the bout, fell to 0-5 with the loss in an entertaining battle that looked closer than its scorecards to WBAN. [Video]

On May 28, 2011 at Club Banco Provincia in City Bell, Buenos Aires, Debora (114½ lbs) won a four-round unanimous (40-37½,40-36, 40-36) decision over 29-year-old southpaw Yessika Flavia Munoz (116½ lbs) of Buenos AIres.  Munoz was game but she was worn down by Dionicius' clear height and reach advantage by the end of a fight that had some wild moments as Munoz tried to rough it up with her taller opponent. Munoz fell to 1-5 (0 KO's) with the loss.  [Video]

On July 23, 2011 at Centro Recreativo Municipal Néstor Carlos Kirchner in Barrio Santa Paula, Buenos Aires, Debora (115 lbs) TKO'd Yessica Flavia Munoz (116 lbs) at 1:00  in the fourth round of a rematch. Dionicius fought assertively and dominated the action against the feisty but much shorter and less polished Munoz. Munoz took an eight count in the third and fell to the canvas against the ropes after taking a flurry of punches including a left to the liver area before the referee halted the unequal battle. The loss dropped Munoz's record to 1-6 (0 KO's). Dionicius vs SallesOn August 27, 2011 at Club Banco Provincia in City Bell, Buenos Aires, Debora (116¼ lbs) TKO'd Anahi Yolanda Salles (118 lbs) of Buenos AIres at 1:08 in the final round of a scheduled six-rounder.  Salles matched Dionicius for height and range and was willing to go toe to toe with her at times, but could not match Dionicius's work rate and accuracy. Dionicius's hard followup rights raised noticeable swelling around Salles's left eye by the middle of the fight and - although Salles kept throwing - she increasingly got the worse of toe to toe action in the later rounds. The fight was stopped when Salles began to bleed heavily from her nose after taking a barrage of punches against the ropes. The loss dropped Salles's pro record to 3-9 (1 KO). [Video]

Dionicius vs JuncosOn October 15, 2011 at Centro Recreativo Municipal Néstor Carlos Kirchner in Barrio Santa Paula, Buenos Aires, Debora (115¼ lbs) TKO'd Marta Soledad Juncos (114¼ lbs) of Santa Rosa de Rio Primero, Argentina at 1:55 in the first round of a scheduled four-rounder. Dionicius scored early and often with telling shots to the head of Juncos who never got untracked in the fight and took a standing eight count before the fight was stopped by the referee with Dionicius setting up shop to punish her opponent against the ropes. Juncos fell to 4-4-2 (0 KO's) and was taken to hospital after the fight. [Video]

On December 17, 2011 at Parque Municipal Eva Perón, Lomas de Zamora, Buenos Aires, Debora (118½ lbs) won a six-round unanimous (60-54,60-54,58-56) decision over Maria del Carmen Potenza (120¼ lbs) of Rosario, Argentina. The well experienced Potenza could not match Dionicius's mobility, hand speed or accuracy and was often forced to cover up to withstand a barrage of both head and body punches as she fell to 6-14-1 (1 KO).  Dionicius looked fully ready for this six-rounder and was the clearly superior boxer as she raised her 2011 tally to 7-0 (3 KO's). [Video]

Dionicius's win over Maria Potenza apparently came only a few hours after she got married earlier that day!

WBAN named Debora Dionicius its Rookie of the Year for 2011 on the strength of her seven wins in nine months.
