Regina Halmich vs. Viktoria Pataki

Aachen, Germany
 September 20th, 1997
fight report
for Women's Boxing Page

Germany's Regina Halmich defended her WIBF world flyweight title against Hungary's Viktoria Pataki in the last fight of the evening.

After two earlier world title fights that night the crowd in Aachen was still willing to stay in their seats for the WIBF ladies fight.

Both ladies were in very good shape, and looked very good.

Pataki showed no respect for the champion from the beginning. In Round One she began to land some hard punches, while Regina was defending well.

In Round Two Regina took some great blows to her head. But if you hit Regina, she gets more aggressive! Regina began to throw left and right hooks. This round was equal overall.

Round Three was a great one for the Hungarian boxer. She kept moving forward all the time, forcing Regina to go back. Both started to throw a lot of left/right hooks without watching, but Pataki was luckier and her punches were more effective.

Pataki continued to go forward in Rounds Four and Five. Regina seemed to get and began to throw some good combinations with some good bodyshots. This confused Pataki a bit. Regina also landed some really hard punches to Pataki's head. But Pataki has a great chin and kept on going forward throwing many hooks.

By the end of Round Five Regina had landed several combinations to the head but her own face was swelling. The offensive style was also becoming a little too much for Pataki. The 30 year old couldn't continue at this "high speed" . The crowd was very excited by the hard fighting these ladies were doing!

In Round Six Pataki was getting tired. Regina was stepping forward and Pataki was going on defence with some desperate combinations of hooks. Regina landed some big punches to Pataki's head. But, as we know from Regina's style in other fights, she also forgot to defend herself properly. She was cut on her left eye which began to bleed badly.

In Round Seven Pataki tried to "work" on that cut. But Regina showed that she was in a great shape. She kept on landing combinations and was still moving well with her feet. Pataki's punches were getting slower and weaker as she was getting really tired.

In Rounds Eight and Nine Regina completely controlled the fight. Pataki was trying to keep on landing punches, but only a few of them were reaching Regina's face. Sometimes there was a lucky punch but that was now a result of Regina's bad defence and Pataki's "willpower".

The last round both ladies wanted to give it their all, but nothing special happened, and Regina took the fight by unanimous decision.

Both ladies had some bruises and swelling at the end of the fight.

Regina showed again that she is a very professional fighter in great shape and has a big fighter character. The harder you hit her, the more she gets motivated . She showed that her conditioning and technique are very good, but she has to keep on working on her defence, which has always been a problem.

Pataki showed that she's someone with great possibilities, but she has to work harder on her conditioning. And she has to do it quickly (she is 30 years old).

I think they both used far too few jabs. We only saw a few during this "fight of hooks".

It was a fascinating fight for the public and it was also seen on German TV.
