Regina Halmich vs. Cathy Brown Round by Round
By Peter Geudens
April 27, 2003

ROUND 1
After a tentative start by both boxers, it’s Halmich who takes the initiative. Brown reacts promptly, which leads to some fierce exchanges. An even round.

ROUND 2
Halmich makes the first move most of the time, but Cathy fights more aggressively, coming in with her head forward and working her opponent’s body. Halfway through the round, she gets cut on her forehead from an accidental head-butt. She’s bleeding, but it doesn’t give her much trouble. She keeps on fighting fiercely and wins this round.

ROUND 3
Regina still takes the initiative, but Brown delivers more powerful blows. At 1’24” in this round, there’s some sensation when a straight right to the shoulder catches Halmich off balance. She goes down on her back but is not really affected and still finishes strongly.

ROUND 4
At first, the fighters ease the pace, then we get some fierce exchanges with both fighters landing quite a few heavy blows. An even round.

ROUND 5
Regina finally manages to adapt to Cathy’s aggressive style. She keeps more distance avoiding Cathy’s punches and using her left jab effectively to win this round.

ROUND 6
Halmich clearly dominates this high-paced round throwing nice combinations and showing superior technical skills. Towards the end Brown retaliates with several swings and hooks to the face. Nevertheless, Halmich wins this one on my card.

ROUND 7
Brown seems to be running out of steam now. She keeps throwing wild swings, but mostly misses and wastes a lot of energy. Halmich remains focussed and is more effective. She wins this round also.

ROUND 8
Both fighters are getting tired. Brown keeps attacking occasionally connecting with a hook or swing.

ROUND 9
Some strong attacks from Cathy, but Regina avoids most of her punches and scores while countering. A close round.

ROUND 10
Both ladies make a last effort to impress the judges. They give everything they got, but they are exhausted and mostly miss their mark.

The judges’ decision: Werner Kasimir (Germany): 98-92 ; Guido Cavalleri (Italy): 97-95; Béla Florian (Hungary): 97-94.

I would agree with the Italian judge. Brown took the first rounds, but eventually Halmich’s experience, technical skills and stamina prevailed over Brown’s courage and superior punching power.

All in all, it was a good competitive fight between two fit and able ladies who showed each other a lot of respect.
