Jeannine "G9" Garside was born on April 14, 1978. She began
boxing as an amateur in Duncan, British Columbia, Canada
after seeing Christy Martin
fight Deirdre Gogarty on a Mike Tyson undercard in
March 1996. Jeannine was the British Columbia champion in 1998 and 1999 and was named British
Columbia Boxer of the Year in 1998.
On January 24, 1999, in the 57-kg final of the 1999 Canadian National Championships
held in Sudbury, Ontario Jeannine defeated Danielle Bouchard of Quebec by a 5-3
score to win her first national title and earn a place on the Canadian National
Women's Boxing team that would soon pit her against some of the best female
fighters in the world at her weight.
On March 24, 1999 in the first leg of the Canada-Sweden Dual in Sudbury/Azilda,
Ontario
Sanna Rauta of Sweden defeated Jeannine by a 12-6 margin in a 57-kg bout.
According to a report
in the National Post, "The two boxers exchanged punishing combinations, lefts and rights,
and then lefts again. Their footwork was smooth and well-practised, their leads and jabs were
crisp, the hurt -- though safely cushioned -- was real. And afterward, when Rauta was pronounced
the winner, Garside's disappointment, as hard as she tried to swallow it, was deeply felt.
'I box because I truly love it,' she said. 'Boxing is a great sport. It's not a street fight,
it's not a brawl, and it's not a circus. We're doing it because we love the sport.'
On March 27, 1999 in the second leg of the Canada-Sweden Dual at the Atlas Boxing Club
in Toronto, Ontario,
Teuta Palushaj of Sweden defeated Jeannine by a 13-4 margin in a 57-kg bout.
On June 26, 1999 in the Canada-USA Dual Meet at
Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Jeannine defeated Adelaida Avalos of the USA by 23-13 in a 57 kg bout.
On December 4, 1999 in the 57 kg final of the 2000 Canadian National
Championships at the Sportsplex in Campbell River, British Columbia,
Jeannine defeated Michelle Collins of Alberta by an 11-1 score.
On March 10, 2000 in the first leg of the Canada vs. Finland Dual Meet in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada,
Jeannine defeated Meri Talvio of Finland by RSC-2 at 57 kg.
Jeannine tore an ACL in her knee during a touch football game in 2000 and this
injury required
reconstructive surgery.
Undeterred, Jeannine returned to the ring and on January 27, 2001 in the 57 kg final of the 2001 Canadian National
Championships in Cap-de-la-Madelaine, Quebec, she defeated Wendy Broad of Quebec by an 11-4 score and was voted
the tournament's Best Boxer.
On October 5 2001 in the Feenix Box Cup International in Turku, Finland,
Jeannine defeated Jonna Emanuelsson of Sweden by RSC-2 at 57 kg.
The next day, she
defeated Hürü Kale of Turkey 19-8, but in the final
the day after she was edged by Henrietta Birkeland Kitel of Norway by a 10-9
score in the division final.

Margaret Sidoroff and Josh Canty have trained her since 2001.
In November 2001 at the Inaugural AIBA World Amateur Championships at the
Scranton High School, Scranton, PA, USA,
Jeannine defeated Cecylia Pudlicka of Poland by a 16-3 score (stopped by the mercy rule)
in her preliminary round 57 kg bout on
November 27. Jeannine went on to defeat Jennifer Han of Texas by 28-18 in her quarterfinal on November 29.
Han, the youngest fighter on Team USA, was knocked down once but bounced back to force
a standing eight-count on a tiring Garside in the third round. Theirs was the most
entertaining bout of the night.
Jeannine again lost to Henriette Birkeland Kitel of Norway
by a close 11-9 decision in the world championship semi-final on November 30.
Garside came out swinging but Birkeland Kitel was not intimidated and circled to her right,
where she tagged the southpaw Garside with several right hands. Garside picked up the
action in the third, but Birkeland Kitel boxed her way to the decision. (The
57-kg division was won by Mao Mao Zhang of
China who defeated Birkeland Kitel by 14-8).
At
the Canadian National Senior Championships in St. Catherines Ontario in January
2002, Jeannine won her fourth straight 57 kg national title with a RSC-2 win
over Angie Collins of Ontario.

Percival (119 lbs) of Fontana, California by a unanimous 40-36 margin , Percival fell

night. Garside was quicker, stronger and simply too tough for Percival.
Percival fought pretty well, but she just could not find a way to slow
Garside."
On August 26, 2005 at the Renaissance Worthington Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas,
Jeannine (136½ lbs) improved to 2-0 as a pro with a four-round unanimous
(39-36,40-36,40-36) decision over Rita Serrano (135¾ lbs) of Fort Worth. Serrano

Garside to dominate. Jeannine went to the body, throwing effective combinations, and
steadily put more pressure on Valentini as the
fight progressed. Valentini, who was on a four fight wining
streak prior to the bout, fell to 6-4 (3 KO's) with the loss.

steady barrage of solid punches. Lisa Brown, another long-time Canadian amateur
star who had fought several world title ten-rounders before this bout, fell to 12-2-2 (4
KOs) with her most decisive pro loss to date. "If you didn't know, you know

On February 16, 2006 at Harrah’s in North Kansas
City, Missouri, USA, Jeannine
improved her record to 5-0 (2 KOs) when she TKO'd Kim Colbert of Southfield,
Missouri in the third round of a scheduled six rounder. According to Allan
Garside, "Jeannine said it was an awkward fight. Jeannine stuck
to mostly a body attack, Kim threw a lot of looping punches but was unable to
connect. Kim got turned around a few times and the the ref may have stopped it
because of that."
Colbert, who's faced a string of top boxers including
Chevelle Hallback and Kelsey Jeffries, fell to a
deceptive 2-9-1 (2 KOs). (For more of Allan Messick's photos of this
fight card, see

On June 23, 2006 at the Shaw
Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada,
Jeannine (121 lbs) and Lisa Brown
(121 lbs) fought to a 10-round majority draw in a defense of Garside's WIBA
title Final judges' scores were 95-95, 95-95, and 96-94 for Brown. Brown came
out strong in the early rounds in an attempt to reclaim her title, winning the
first three by setting the pace with effective aggression, getting off
first and landing harder and more frequently.
Garside made adjustments in the fourth and closed the bout well, trading toe to
toe with Brown. “I thought I was pacing myself,” Garside
told
reporter Doug Rowe. “I thought I was taking the rounds. I had her back to the
ropes and I had her hurt three times in the fight. I am confused. What they want
is to see me fight her again and that’s fine. There will not be any question the
next time I fight her. I has nothing to do with revenge, it just has to do with
who is the champ, and I am the champ!”
Lisa was equally adamant that she had won the bout, telling Rowe: “It
was robbery. I came out to fight, I did what I had to do . . . I come and give
the fight of my life and they call it a draw. I can’t believe it. The first time
I fought her, I wasn’t in shape, I had so much going on I wasn’t mentally in
shape, mentally and physically. This time I actually got my game together and I
was hungry. So I came out to put on the best fight of my life.”
Negotiations are reportedly under way for a
third match between the two Ontario rivals. Jeannine
moved her pro record to 5-0-1 (2 KOs) while Lisa Brown moved to 12-2-3 (4
KOs).

On November 4, 2006 at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Jeannine
(126 lbs) won a clear (100-87,99-89,98-90) ten-round
unanimous decision over Las Vegas-based veteran Laura
Serrano (123 lbs) of Mexico for the vacant WIBA Featherweight title.According
to a report
by Shawn Roth of FightNews Canada, "Garside
thoroughly dominated the fight from the opening bell, punishing Serrano with a
relentless left hook that the Mexican fighter could not deal with. Serrano was
put to the canvas in the third and tenth round but returned to her feet, a true
testament of her toughness. Serrano refused to stay down, shook the cobwebs off
and continued to brawl with Garside, which garnered the appreciation of the
crowd for her unbelievable ability to take punishment and keep fighting."
Jeannine improved to 6-0-1 (2 KOs)
while dropping Laura to 16-3-2 (6 KO's). Jeannine
exchanged fight trunks with Laura Serrano
immediately following the bout, which Serrano stated would be her last.

On September 21, 2007 at Meadowbrook Music Festival
in Rochester Hills, Michigan, Jeannine (130 lbs), now managed by Jackie Kallen,
TKO'd undefeated Brooke Dierdorff (125 lbs) of Illinois at 1:10 in the sixth
round, in a scheduled six rounder. There was no love lost between the two from
the opening bell. Garside knocked Dierdorff down three times before referee
Frank Garza called a halt to it in round six. The fight was not without
controversy after Garside punched at Dierdorff after Dierdorff went down against
the ropes in the first round, risking a disqualification. Dierdorff recovered
well and her accurate punching made a fight of it until Garside got the upper
hand in the final round. Garside's record
improved to 7-0-1 (3 KOs), while Dierdorff's
fell to 4-1-1 (3 KOs). (For more of Dan Graschuk's photos of this
fight, see

"I have all the confidence in the world in this girl!" Kallen said of
Garside, adding "They loved her!".

"She’s aggressive, has no care about who she’s in there with or what’s going on. It doesn’t matter if
it’s her mother in the ring, she’s gonna whip their ass. She only knows one speed and that’s kill.
And she’s got the heart of a lion. Jeannine’s the hardest hitter of anybody her size I’ve ever seen",
said trainer Sidoroff before the WIBA title fight with Brown.
