On November 14, 2009 at the

Tsagouris (124 lbs) of Brampton, Ontario won a six-round
unanimous (60-55, 60-54 and 60-53) decision over Mayerlin
Rivas (125¾ lbs) of in
a six-round contest.
According to WBAN correspondent Rick McLean, "In
the opening round, Tsagouris pressured Rivas and landed crisp head and
body shots mixing up her combinations well. However, Tsagouris was
warned for hitting behind the head and Rivas protested loudly to the
referee. The same action continued through rounds two and three as
Tsagouris utilized her jab, cut off the ring well and started to break
down Rivas' defence. To her credit Rivas was a hard puncher with a lot
of heart and determination who kept trying to unload bombs. In the
fourth round Tsagouris was cut over the corner of her left eye however
it did not impair her vision. In round 5, Rivas came out strong and
nailed Tsagouris with two hard rights to the head however she seemed to
punch herself out and was only able to fight in spurts for the rest of
the round. Throughout round six Rivas looked exhausted as she
continually backed up and tried to hold on. Tsagouris was able to pound
away at Rivas but was unable to drop her. A game Rivas showed a lot of
heart and won over the Hamilton crowd and is a definite contender. She
deserves a lot of credit for her determination." Tsagouris
improved to 10-1 (4 KO's) while Rivas fell to 5-1 (4 KO's).

Zulina
Muñoz tested hard by Mayerlin Rivas in July 2010
On July
9, 2010 at the Gran Forúm
in Mexico City, Zulina Muñoz
(117 lbs) of Mexico City controversially retained the
WBC
Youth Bantamweight
title with a majority (93-93-93-93,92-93) draw
against Mayerlin Rivas (116¾ lbs). Rivas sent
Muñoz to
the canvas in the fifth, sixth and seventh rounds. The knockdown in the
fifth came more from a push than a punch, but in the sixth
Muñoz was dropped by
a clean one-two combination. However, Rivas faded in the last three
rounds of the clinch-filled fight while Munoz piled on the
pressure and squared the scorecards with help from a point
that
was deducted from Rivas in the ninth round. Both
boxers had kept the referee busy throughout a fight that at times
resembled a stand-up wrestling match more than sweet science as Munoz
repeatedly charged into Rivas with her head down to get to close
quarters. The
close result sparked controversy and Rivas' manager Orangel "Memin"
Ramos asked WBC for an immediate rematch between the two boxers. The
WBC reviewed video of the fight and has reportedly
ordered a rematch. Munoz
moved to 23-1-2 (17 KO's).
