5'4" bantamweight Simone Aparecida da Silva Duarte boxes out of gyms in São Paulo
and São Vicente, Brazil.
Simone is the daughter of a retired boxer, Erotildes Baltazar. She began boxing
at the age of 6 and was Brazilian 57-kg amateur champion at age 19.
She made her
pro debut on December 9, 2005 at Ginasio Giodesico in Osasco,
São Paulo, Brazil. She weighed in at 119 lbs and won a four-round unanimous (40-36,40-35,40-36)
decision over Renata Cristina Dos Santos Ferreira (120 lbs) of Brazil who fell to
0-2-0.
On September 30, 2006 at Companhia Athletica Brooklin in São
Paulo, she won a
four-round unanimous (40-37,40-36,40-35) decision over pro debuter Naime Santana
of Brazil.
On November 25, 2006 at Companhia Athletica Brooklin in São
Paulo, Simone (121 lbs)
won a six-round unanimous (60-54,60-54,60-55) decision over 33-year-old Silvia Raquel Gervasi (125 lbs)
of Argentina who fell to 0-3-0.
On March 17, 2007 at Companhia Athletica Brooklin
in São Paulo, Simone (121½ lbs)
won the WIBA South American Super Bantamweight title with a sixth-round
TKO of Patricia Alejandra Quirico (122 lbs) of Buenos Aires, Argentina in a scheduled eight-rounder.
With the contest clearly slipping away from her, the 45-year-old Argentinian – according to
da Silva Duarte –
resorted to constant clinching before deliberately butting her in the face. At
his point the 23-year-old Brazilian, no longer content to coast to an easy points win, went ballistic and took her
apart, though the fight was stopped – early in the sixth – before she could impose the ultimate
sanction of knocking Quirico out. Quirico not only fell to 10-5-0 with this
loss but was also stripped
of her UBC World Super Bantamweight Title, under a rule by which UBC champions
must forfeit their titles if they lose a non-title fight inside the distance.
Quirico's tenure of a world title was itself controversial - following her KO by
Marcela Acuña's first punch in her boxing debut, she had fought mostly winless opponents
(losing to any with winning records) and had won the UBC belt by defeating the
same (winless) Renata Cristina Dos Santos Ferreira who Simone had defeated in
her own pro debut.
On June 16, 2007 at
the Maksoud Plaza Hotel in São Paulo, Simone (118 lbs) TKO'd
Paola Esther Herrera (116½ lbs) of Cartagena, Colombia at 0:24 in the fifth round of a scheduled
eight rounder for the WIBA South American Bantamweight Title. Herrera, who had
previously been matched against Marcela Acuña for the
WBA Junior Featherweight title, fell to 13-2-2 with this loss (but there are
different versions of the number of wins on her record),
"I showed that I was well prepared and confident", said Duarte. "I was facing an experienced
opponent with good technique but I still managed to land a good many blows. I
was surprised she didn’t go down earlier.” Some reports of this fight
say that Simone showed more skill than the better-known
Duda Yankovich, who fought for the WIBA world Junior Welterweight title in
the card's Main Event.
On September 15, 2007 at Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, Simone (117 lbs)
won an eight round unanimous (80-71,80-71,80-71) decision over Paulina "La Niña" Cardona (117¼ lbs) of
Barranquilla, Colombia defending the
WIBA South American Bantamweight Title. The 17-year-old Cardona fell to 9-3-3 (4 KO's) with the loss.
On April 19, 2008 at Companhia Athletica Brooklin in Sao Paulo, Brazil, SImone
won an eight-round unanimous decision over pro debuter Valeria Dos Santos, also
of Sao Paolo.
On December 13, 2008 at Tenis Clube Sao Jose dos Campos, Sao Paulo, Brazil,
Simone won a scheduled eight-rounder over Natalia del Pilar Burga of San Luis,
Argentina when Burga was disqualified in the sixth round. Burga fell to 4-3 with
the loss.
On
April 9, 2010 at Anfiteatro Municipal in
San Martin, Argentina, Yesica Marcos of San Martin, Argentina won a clear
ten-round unanimous (99-91,97-94,97-91)
decision over Simone for the WBA Interim Junior Featherweight
title. The taller Duarte was unable to match Marcos's busy work
rate and boxing skills and
Marcos was able to wear her down with body punching in the
later rounds.
Marcos advanced to
15-0-1 (4 KO's) with the win. On April 9, 2011 at Ginásio
de Esportes de Candangolândia,in Brasília, Distrito Federal, Brazil,
Simone (122½ lbs) won a six-round unnaimous decision over Betina Garino
(123¾ lbs) of Santa Fe, Argentina who fell to 15-10-1 (2 KO's). On
August 20, 2011 in Sao Paolo, Brazil, Simone TKO'd pro debuter Bruna
Perez of Criciuma, Brazil at 1:54 in the first round of a scheduled six
rounder. On October 8, 2011 at Estadio
Polideportivo Gustavo “Toro” Rodríguez in San Martín, Mendoza,
Argentina, Yesica Marcos (122 lbs) of San Martin scored an
impressive TKO over Simone (122 lbs) for the WBO and WBA Interim Junior Featherweight titles.. Duarte
was unable to come out for the start of the fifth round after enduring
a relentless barrage from the hard hitting Marcos. Marcos set a furious
pace from the start and peppered the taller Duarte with hard shots to
the head and left hooks to the liver followed by uppercuts to the chin.
Duarte was unable to slow Marcos down and was often backed into the
ropes where Marcos threaded hard combinations to the face and body
through her defense. The fourth round ended with Duarte, who
had put on a brave show of not being hurt by Marcos's barrage, suddenly
in obvious pain. Between rounds Duarte complained of an injured left
hand as well as the evident punishment she had taken to her head and
body. Marcos moved her record to 18-0-1 (6 KO's) with a dominant
performance while Duarte fell to 10-2 (3 KO's) with her second loss to
Marcos. [Video] On April 13, 2012 at Polideportivo Municipal de Necochea, Argentina, Alejandra Oliveras
(132) of Argentina stopped Simone Da Silva Duarte (134¼ lbs) in
the fifth round of a scheduled eight-rounder with no title on
the line. The Brazilian was kneeling on the canvas after taking
three
consecutive body shots when the referee stopped the fight. Oliveras
improved her record to 25-2-2 (11 KO's) while Duarte fell to 10-3 (3
KO's).

Simone's husband and trainer Marcos Duarte thinks she still “... needs to show a bit more tranquility in the
ring. Boxing isn’t just about knocking someone out. In fact, the more you go
looking for the knockout, the less likely you are to find it. A knockout is the
logical outcome of a well fought fight.”
