(JUNE 16) In Detroit, Michigan on an ESPN2 card, Nikki Eplion
fought Yvonne Reis on the undercard, in a scheduled four rounder on
June 13.
The fight itself apparently was a cluster from the word go!
Retired IFBA World Champion and trainer Bonnie Canino told WBAN the
following about the fight:
"First I wasn't real happy about the communication with event coordinator
on the June 13th show in Detroit. Their hospitality was very nice. Yvonne
lost a four-round decision. It was like a roller coaster ride. Yvonne and
Nikki were the 4th fight of the evening. Yvonne got ready to go out for
the next fight. It was 25 minutes before ESPN2 was to go live and decided
that they wanted to wait on the 4th fight. That was OK....it's expected.
They were taping the other fights before. The feature event had a 1st
round knock out, so we thought we would be next. I had no information from
anyone and couldn't find anyone to give me answers about when we were
going on. They put a men's six-rounder on. Then the main event that went
the distance. Great. We get ready again, but nothing happened for 10
minutes after the main event walk off. They came up to us and told that
was the end of the show, that they had a contract with the arena till 12pm
and it would cost them $5000 more to stay open. Everyone was leaving, the
judges, EMT's, etc. The man that told us helped take Yvonne gloves off and
I cut her right hand wrap off. We were both disappointed. T
Then the fight was on. Nikki was already in the ring. We said what's going
on. The fight was back on, it's hard to get fights, so Yvonne fought. I
had no more hand wraps to put on Yvonne's right hand. So I did what I
could do in a hurry and ran to the ring. We put Yvonne's gloves back
on her in the ring----the bell rang. Yvonne was in good condition, but her
head was not there. Nikki didn't beat Yvonne, Yvonne beat herself with the
roller coaster ride and could not be mentally focused. Yvonne pushed the
fight toward Nikki. Nikki took the first two rounds out scoring her, and
the next two Yvonne came back. Nikki did a lot of holding when they were
inside. It wasn't enough for Yvonne to win in all the judges score card.
We had asked for a rematch. Also no one told us till before the fight that
it would be 3 minutes rounds in Detroit Michigan. Yvonne is not
discourage and ready to fight again against anyone."
