July 8, 2003

12 Sports Productions in association with Miller Brewing Company and The Hyatt Regency Monterey presents Riot at the Hyatt. Promoter is Jerry Hoffman.

Last Thursday, July 3,  In front of a sold-out crowd, local favorite Carina Moreno, from nearby Watsonville, made her pro debut a wildly successful one with a unanimous four round decision victory over previously unbeaten Cecilia “Boom Boom” Barraza, 109 lbs, from Chicago, IL.
Moreno, who weighed in at 109 ½ lbs, took charge early in this one using an effective jab followed up by two and three punch combinations.

Signs of Carina’s effective punching began to show early in round two as Cecilia’s nose bleed from catching straight rights and lead-off left hooks.

Round three showed excellent ring movement by Carina and her combinations kept Barraza off balance.

In the fourth and final round Moreno was intent on stopping matters as she went hard and heavy at Barraza throwing punches from all angles. The crowd was behind Carina with every punch but Barraza showed true heart and stayed on her feet for the final bell.

All three judges saw it 40-36 for Moreno. Moreno is 1-0 while Barraza’s record now stands at 2-1.

In the main event, Ricardo Barragan, San Jose, CA improved his record to 8-3 with a unanimous six round decision over Tony “Bonz” Avila, originally from Modesto now fighting out of Las Vegas.

Avila, trained by former light heavyweight champ Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, was hurt twice in the opening round by uppercuts but did not go down. In round two,

Tony visited the canvas from another uppercut but he would survive the round. It was the only knockdown of the bout.  Ricardo would go on to hurt Avila on several occasions during the bout but could not put away a tough Avila. Tony now goes to 5-2.

In other action:

Sheldon Callum, San Francisco, CA, 168lbs, improves to an even 4-4 with a fourth round knockout of Maurice Hooks, Modesto, CA 170 lbs. Hooks falls to 0-2.

Roy Meador, Sacramento, CA, 207 lbs, showed why he is called The Body Crusher as the body shots were the difference in a convincing four round unanimous decision victory over Joel Mosley, Canyon County, CA, 216 lbs.

Meador, stays undefeated at 4-0 while Mosley, no relation to Shane, fails to avenge his pro debut loss and now goes to 0-2.

Ricardo Junez, Napa, CA, got the crowd warmed up with an impressive four round unanimous decision over tough veteran Joaquim Candelario, Phoenix, AZ.
Junez, a talented and exciting fighter who was remembered for his thrilling second round KO over Fairtex in the previous Riot at the Hyatt, improves to 2-0 while Candelario drops to 6-27. Both fighters weighed in at 115 ¼ lbs.

In an upset, Javier Garcia, Los Angeles, CA counterpunched his way to a split decision victory over the previously undefeated Luis “Torito” Perez, Salinas, CA. This was the first six round fight for both fighters. Garcia improves to 3-3-1. Torito goes to 5-1.

Holly Stell, 10 years old, was one of the highlights as she sung the National Anthem to get the evening started. Holly, from Los Angeles, CA has performed at the White House.
